A standout design icon and exceptionally rare find in chrome, this Bumling floor lamp was created in 1968 by celebrated Swedish designer Anders Pehrson for Ateljé Lyktan. The series is renowned for its sculptural “boulder-like” presence and ingenious layered light diffusion, few chrome floor versions surface, making this a true collector’s treasure in the Australian market.
The robust polished chrome stem and weighted circular base support the commanding domed acrylic shade with its signature concentric ring louvres. Illuminated, it produces a soft, dramatic, multi-layered glow that transforms spaces with sophisticated modernist elegance.
Condition
Good authentic vintage condition. The shade displays some gentle surface bumps from age (visible in photos), and the original internal grill has had minor repairs with option of a new grill if you so wish. Currently on back order from Sweden. Will note it is missing the top diffuser plate (a relatively common detail with these shades). These elements do not detract from its striking visual appeal or function — it remains a confident showstopper for design enthusiasts. Original manufacturer label present. Fully functional.
Details
Shade: The signature Bumling ring-louvred dome shade (typically the larger size in the series). It’s the iconic concentric acrylic diffuser design that defines the Bumling collection.
• Stand/Base: This is a chrome floor lamp stem with round weighted base (straight cylindrical chrome pole)
The Bumling series was modular, different shade sizes/finishes were paired with various bases (floor, table, pendant, wall). This combines the classic large ringed shade with a dedicated straight chrome floor stand, which contributes to its rarity (chrome floor versions are far less common than brass or coloured aluminium ones)
• Designer: Anders Pehrson, 1968
• Manufacturer: Ateljé Lyktan, Sweden
• Materials: Polished chrome with acrylic ring shade and original grill
• Extremely rare chrome floor variant
