This stunning vintage coffee table is a true collector’s piece by renowned Hungarian-Australian coppersmith Louis Berczi (1938–2015). Born in Hungary, Berczi fled the 1956 uprising and migrated to Australia in 1964, where he founded the Berczi Copper Company. His hand-hammered copper works are highly sought after and held in private collections and institutions across Australia.

The table features a beautifully hand-hammered copper top created using traditional cold-hammering techniques. Berczi struck the copper sheet repeatedly by hand with various hammers to produce the signature dense pattern of circular dimples. This labour-intensive process work-hardens the metal, adding strength, texture, and beautiful light-catching depth. The top sits on a solid dark timber pedestal base with exposed rivets and elegant curved supports. The original maker’s plaque stamped “BERCZI” is clearly visible on the underside. 

One of the coolest details is how the copper top has been expertly bent over the wooden frame and nailed/secured around the edge — a distinctive handcrafted construction method that wraps the metal securely while showcasing the raw, artisanal finish on the underside (visible black backing with visible nails and stitching-like detailing).

Condition:

Genuine vintage condition with beautiful aged patina and natural tarnish marks (including the characteristic “weed tarnish” streaks and occasional blue-green verdigris accents) across the copper surface. These marks are part of the hammered texture and the piece’s authentic story — not damage. Structurally sound with no major dents. A rare find; very few of these tables appear on the market (with almost none at recent auctions).
